Foundations of college writing

In my foundations of college writing class with Dr. sherry, I learned how to create different forms of writing and compose them into numerous styles of genres. We learned how to critically analyze forms of writing and use the principles of analyzing to create our own models. By using these principles, we created research papers, created satires, and created brochures to help us create successful models from our own thoughts. Upon learning these skills, I transformed my research paper into a power point slide and a created a satire about my research. I did this because the goal was to learn how to create different forms of writing that is appropriate for that particular audience. My research paper was about staying persistent in college and I use my findings to compose different forms of writing for college students, their parents ,and college faculty/staff. In my final project, I created a story about my personal life. I use key moment from my past, my present, and my future, and connected all of those moments back to a question that was address in class, which was want does it mean to be educated.

Goal A. Students will be able to compose for particular audiences and purposes.

This goal is stating that students will be able to transform their writings into different forms of genres for different audiences. In my foundations of writing class, we learned how to do this by first deciding which form of writing will best fit the particular audience. I choose to use examples from my own projects by composing a power point for faculty/staff and writing a cover letter for a future employer. I use my research paper about college persistence. I use the information that I got form there and created a power point that would be more impelling to parents instead of actual college students. I also use my cover letter and wrote about why I would be a good employee in a college setting. In my cover letter, I stress the importance of keeping college students in school and to prevent dropouts. I stated that I would be able to keep college students in college based on the information that I learned from my research.

with my power point slide, I was trying to stress the message to college students and their parents that college persistence comes from being involved and having someone to help you along the way. In my message I was stating that it is good to be independent, but it is a better chance that you will be successful if you seek help as well. I say this because everyone is going to need help every once in a while and you can learn and grow by getting help from others.

In my letter(below), I used the same exact information form my research paper and my power point slide and turn it into a form of a cover letter. In my cover letter, I was trying to convince a future employer to hire me be me for there university because I felt I would be a great asset to there staff. I said I would be a great asset because I would encourage college kids to stay persistent in college by joining clubs and asking for help. So by turning my research paper into a power point slide and a cover letter, I was able to compose for a particular audience and a particular purpose.

I believe my cover letter was a good way to compose for a different audience because I wasn't writing for a group of college kids, I was writing for a potential future boss. I think these my two projects satisfied goal A. successfully.

Goal B. Students are able to compose using language and conventions appropriate to genre.

For this goal, I think the most appropriate project to use in my clue project. The clue project was a research paper that we had to do to discuss a topic about college that we felt was interesting. For this project, I used outside sources. interviews from friends, and my own perspective on my topic. My topic was about how to stay in college and to avoid dropping out. I really found this topic interesting because I believe college is a struggle, but if you have people that are with you every step of the way you can power through it.

This paper really help us grasp the concept of using language and conventions appropriate to genre because it gave us a good foundation of how college research papers should be. It gave us the skills to successfully create a well thought out research paper and that's something that I am going to need for my next three years in college. This is why I think my clue research paper was a good example at displaying this goal.

Goal C. students will be able to read, select, and use evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.
I think my clue project also satisfy this goal as well. I think my clue project satisfy this goal because I use evidence in the form of other people's writings and my peers prospective to back up my claims in my paper. I used other writers claims when I wrote a quote from L. Ruberman. In they quote he writes, "students manage to get from one term to another by relying on either their own inner strengths or that of adults, parents or teachers that offer them help" (Ruberman, 2014). I used this quote to emphasize on the importance of family members and other outside sources that can help you get through the struggles of college. I think this was a perfect example of reading and selecting evidence critically to formulate and support arguments.

Goal D. Students will be able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/ non print genres.

For this goal, I think the best examples that I did to fulfill this goal was my college endurance power point and my satire about college. I think these projects really captured the idea of this goal because these projects was not made in a formal essay, but still was able to delivery a message in the same way that a paper would. I believe this goal was basically stating that students will be able to create different forms of writing and still give out a clear message. For My power point, My goal was to get faculty and staff and students to realize the importance of help when you are in college. I could have wrote this out in a normal paper, but instead I use a variety of not print genres.

I also used my satire poster. My goal in this satire was to give out a message about the stereotypes about college debt. I basically made fun off this stereotype by stating that college only bring you debt in your life but this is not true. Their are a lot of ways you can pay for college without pilling loans on your record. You as a student just have to be determined to find those opportunities.

These two projects show clear evidence that I was able to interpret and compose in a variety of media and print/ non print genres. I say this because I was still able to get my message across in print, but I did it in another form of genre instead of a research or regular paper.

Goal E. Students will be able to discuss and apply appropriate writing processes both individually and in collaborative contexts.
This goal is stating that students will be able to create writing projects own their own and use critiques from their peers to help them make there writing better. In foundations of writing class, We had this routine where we would do a project and then we would come in for peer review, where are classmates and teacher would give us feedback on are project. This really help me a lot because it I got a lot of feedback on my project about things that I could have improved on. The way I demonstrated this is by having a peer review sheet on the tell project. The tell project was basically a project where we had to pick three key moments from are past, present, and future and relate those moments back to what it meant to be educated The peer review sheet was a sheet where we gave our feedback on how well we thought peer review went.
peer review sheet

Once I was done with peer review, I use the feedback I got from them to create a well final draft of my tell project. The feedback I got from this project was very good because it gave me good insight on how to organize my paper and how well I should describe my key moments. I think overall peer review was very helpful and was a good routine to incorporate in the class.

My revised tell project.

By learning these five goals, I think they helped me to become a better writer all together. I think that I took a lot out from this class and I know that I am well prepared for future writing courses that I might face during my college career. I think I will never forget the principles and the skills that I learned in foundations of college writing and I will use the skills learned in this class to tackle any writing assignment I get.
